If you asked even knowledgeable blues fans what blues music came from Detroit in the late '40s and early '50s, most of them probably couldn't name anything besides the early recordings of John Lee Hooker. In fact, however, some other artists did record primitive blues often of the full-band and electric sort in the city at the time, spurred in part by Hooker's considerable success. Joe Von Battles approach to producing may have amounted to little more than turning the tape machine on and off but, in his ramshackle way, he preserved some of the greatest blues and R&B not to mention gospel that ever found its way into a tape vault. Happily the demand for Deroit blues suggests that the next volume in this series will not be 32 years in the making. Indeed, since putting this project to bed, Peter Gibbon and I have been able to locate the original acetates for Kings Baby Boy Warren, and some of the Walter Mitchell masters which we hope to feature on Vol 2. The genesis of Blues music in Detroit occurred as a result of the first wave of the Great Migration of African-Americans from the Deep South. In 1948, Besman recorded Hookers seminal Boogie Chillen and ran the artistic side of the label until its demise in 1952. Local entrepreneur Joe Von Battle was another key figure on the blues scene in the back of his record shop on Hastings Street he recorded a number of blues acts that appeared on his JVB and Von record labels. In 1954 Hank Ballard & the Midnighters crossed over from the R&B charts to the pop charts with Work With Me, Annie.
