I asked this question elsewhere as I have looked over this site at least three times. Can anyone show me where the third state stereo peels are listed here? I only see first state and other copies. Thank you so much in advance! Many regards, Gary

An addendum to my post: Never mind, I found the listing for stereo peels.

found mine in an old junk shop in Northern Minnesota--for $25.00. I was too young at the time this record was made to know anything about it. I bought it because it was the Beatles. I brought it home, still factory sealed, and placed it on my rack with the other Beatles albums. I never opened it because it seemed redundant in terms of the song list. Finally pulled it from the shelf, and having never heard of the album--what a surprise to find out what I had lucked upon. Mine is one of the few that never had a second cover pasted over it. Since I could not believe I had the real thing, I had to open it to check the run out. It still, however, has the original, loose plastic wrap--with the tag from the reseller that says "new".

That's awesome but I'm honestly so surprised you opened it.

Yesterday and Today is one of the most solid Beatles albums out there, and that praise is just for the music, not the banned album cover that is now highly prized.Once again in 1966 we find The Beatles releasing an album for the American market only, a collection of songs that were recorded but never used from sessions in 1965 and 1966. For this reason many critics claim that Yesterday and Today is not an authentic album, being a mere compilation, as it wasn’t derived from a concept … but then so many Beatles albums were laced with material that spanned many years. For that reason, the record has always maintained a special and important place in my Beatle’s collection. As to the butcher cover: Enjoying a bit of frolic and the lads were sincerely tired of doing simply another photo session, the band decided to work with Robert Whittaker for a project called “A Somnambulant Adventure,” which was a rather extensive project featuring the four lads from Liverpool dressed in white butcher’s smocks, surrounded by pieces of meat and body parts from plastic dolls ... though this was only part of a conceptual piece. Due to a couple of seemingly incomprehensible oversights, the butcher cover found its way onto about 750,000 copies of Yesterday and Today. These copies were recalled by Capitol the day after its release and were either dumped in landfills or hastily covered up with the much more friendly “trunk cover,” which was much less shocking and much more appropriate for a band with a following as large as the Beatles. At the time, this was seen as the first big public relations blunder that the band had made. The image idea belonged to Robert Whitaker, a 26-year-old Australian photographer with a dark sense of humor and love of the surreal, which made him one of the band’s favorite cameramen. Whitaker was responsible for some of the most profound images of the Fab 4; with Whitaker winning praise for his amusing portrait of John Lennon posed with a dandelion over one eye. Drawn from the Greek myth of Narcissus and a quote from Euripides, the image beautifully captured the Beatles’ idiosyncratic sensibilities. Now, when the group arrived at his studio in London’s chic Chelsea neighborhood on March 25th, 1966, the well-read Whitaker had a more ambitious concept in mind. “I got fed up with taking squeaky-clean pictures of the Beatles, and I thought I’d revolutionize what pop idols are.” Having personally witnessed the biblical level of Beatle adulation, including their record-breaking concert at Shea Stadium, Whitaker was inspired to create a satirical photo series that would address the absurd degree of their fame and remind fans that these rock deities were actually flesh and blood. “All over the world I’d watched people worshiping like gods, four Beatles,” he explained. “To me they were just stock standard normal people. But this emotion that fans poured on them made me wonder where Christianity was heading.” The track list for Yesterday and Today consisted of songs elbowed from the abridged American versions of Help! and Rubber Soul, padded out with recent hit singles and three new Lennon compositions recorded for the Revolver sessions. When pushed to supply a cover, the Beatles’ promptly submitted the “butcher” photo. Today many fans insist this was a dig at Capitol for “butchering” their American albums by altering the track sequence. Whitaker categorically denied this, dismissing the claims as “… rubbish, absolute nonsense.”When it comes to the music, the styles, visions and sounds are wide and varied, infusing their harmonic meanderings in jangle pop Byrd-ish fashion, enjoying both a romp though the folk-rock scene and ever so gently slipping into the psychedelic waters, waters that would become a wave, washing over the world. Understandably, at this time most music lovers did not appreciate Ringo’s two tracks, “Act Naturally” along with “What Goes On,” though over time, these numbers have taken on a life and respect of their own. All of that aside, the album never had a chance to actually fall or out of favor, as its place on the music charts was short-lived, with Revolver being released in a mere two months, with not much more needing to be said on that topic.Aside from the album art, the record varies in its production, where primarily in America, several tracks were vested with enhanced echo and profoundly increased stereo separation attributes, though how different takes could find their way onto the same album (possibly different additions) is a bit perplexing, where even the UK version differers from the two American mixes. It is thought that this aspect was due to the stereo-ization of the record. Overly obsessive Beatles fans (and I’m one of them) will point out that some things can be heard in the mono version that are not heard on the stereo version, and that whole sections have been faded out … but this is something you need to discover on your own with back to back comparisons. Regardless, this is not a bad bunch of tunes by any stretch of the imagination, with the songs coming across as assured, energetic and forward looking, where the boys sound incredibly young and spirited, all the while with their finger on the pulse of a radically changing world.*** The Fun Facts: The album’s title was based on the song “Yesterday.”Yes … I own one of the infamous Butcher Covers. Actually the backstory is, my aunt worked next to the Sears store in Chester, Pennsylvania, she purchased this album for me for the holidays and promptly forgot about it. I actually received it for my birthday the following year. By the time I held this bit of history in my arms I was already acutely aware of the rumors, and all those who'd ruined their copies. The glueing was rather rudimentary at best, but I didn’t want to mess it up, meaning I was one of the lucky ones who left things as they were. In the early 1990’s I finally had the money to take my prized possession to a proper paper conservator in New York City. This was not his first rodeo with Yesterday and Today, so there was already a process in place. Not only does my copy look great, but I also have the original Trunk Cover that was laid over this gem.Review by Jenell Kesler

@ verjan2: sure looks like a butcher to me - take a look at the bottom seam.

This makes sense. As a major reggae collector, a lot of LP's that were licensed to be pressed in Jamaica from the UK and US and used the sleeves from the country they were licensed from. Even the pressing plates. My guess is that Capitol licensed it to Jamaica at a rate of a few hundred copies only and sent them the pressing plate that was used for the US press and a few hundred covers to limit the amount they pressed. You can see a great example of Bob Marley's Soul Rebels LP in which the JA press used the UK stamper and the UK sleeve but had a Jamaican label. And since the popularity of it exceeded the few hundred covers sent they were then repressed with Jamaican made covers.

I think this edition does not look like butcher cover.

I think it’s what they call “2nd state”, meaning this cover was pasted over the butcher cover. 3rd state is when someone’s peeled off the steamer trunk cover to reveal the butcher cover.

It is, don't worry, we checked. You can see bubbles from the paste-on sticker in our photo
