The band is known for its eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, country, jazz, bluegrass, blues, gospel, and psychedelic rock for live performances of lengthy instrumental jams and for its devoted fan base, known as Deadheads. Their music, writes Lenny Kaye, touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists. These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic. Anyone's C side sound awful? Getting no vocals in sugaree
Rrd
Check out the soaring China Cat. I've never heard the dead sound better.
Aver
Guys - it's the soundboard recording of the show, warts and all. Something got messed up THAT DAY AT THE BOARD and they lost vocals for several songs (the now infamous "Side C"). You will NEVER find a soundboard version of this show with those vocals. It doesn't exist. All Grateful Dead shows are Caveat Emptor. If you're springing money on rando shows like this on vinyl, I can't imagine you don't know that. If you're looking for the perfect Dead show, you're looking for a rare bird indeed. They exist, but they are famous for being 'perfect.' Now, we can argue the merits and reasoning for why they picked a show with these defects, but that's a different conversation. If you listen to the 2nd set, you'll see why they picked this show. The 1st set is very run of the mill. Overall, is it a superb show? No not in my opinion. Is the SB documentation of it ideal? Obviously not. Should they have picked a different show? Yeah probably. Should YOU as the BUYER have tracked down this show on line (EXTREMELY EASY TO DO, AND TOTALLY FREE) to give at least a cursory stream before you plunked down so much money? Yep. It's on you. It's not some long lost show. All this stuff is out there already.

Only the second half of this show is anything special..... while it’s crucial to have several iterations of the same dead song on wax, I still do not see why they chose this hefty set. Donna screams, Jerry seems off, the crowd is throaty and boisterous...... and this isn’t even mentioning the screw upMaybe rhino and the Dead’s camp have had a breakdown in communication, or something worse.... Maybe the next release will actually have some deep jams/ improvisations , and some rare tunes.
Dancing Lion
On a second listen , there’s an audible fuzz in the left channel for lots of low volume parts... And I can remember three maybe four truly unique moments.... obviously everything the dead touches is gold, but with the current limited selection of shows pressed, I think we’ve been spoiled. 3/10 for this release.

Comment below is mind blowing, nowhere near their best sounding vinyl. Ton of sound mixing problems. Up until side C, Jerry's guitar sounds like it's far away inside of a tin can, then the side C blunder. From Side D on it seems as though they fixed it, but his guitar still seems low volume in certain spots. The weather report suite is one of my favorites and I was extremely excited for this release and to have that song on vinyl, but this is a lackluster version. Yes there are plenty of sweet spots, the china-rider, and everything from side J to the end, but for all of the mixing issues, it's absolutely shameful and baffling that a) they chose this show as the vinyl release and b) that they didn't at least have a disclaimer about the mixing issues like they used to do with Dick's Picks releases. Especially for the amount of money they are charging for this. My copy also had a ton of snap-crackle-pops on a couple of sides, so bad that I stopped the record for fear of ruining the cartridge. I bought 2 copies to use one as a gift. I'll be returning both for a refund.

Different strokes for different folks, buddy. You don't have to agree, but I prefer the sound of this '74 release to the sound of many other GD releases. It's rather mind-blowing that someone would think a 1974 release would be perfect. It's not perfect. But then again, the GD did things differently. Their songs changed every night. Unlike you, I can get past side C vocals (who listens to the GD for vocals anyway), and find many beautiful moments on every disc.
Dishadel
Donna's vocals are also super hot & generally in the front of the overall mix too.. sounds disastrous frequently
Gardagar
I noticed side A had Billy's drums way up in the front of the mix, & until about side D, the entirety of the mix is generally off & kind of muddy, especially Bobby's vocal mix- sounds super hot & distorted. Jerry definitely sounded off early in the show too. Its a fun package with great artwork & some golden moments for sure, but the retail cost of this should be at least half of what it goes for, given all the issues.
Malojurus
This is how the source material sounds too I checked on Archive, but yeah you'd think that would be a glaring issue to the otherwise perfectionist predilection for their releases (though not as strict as it was when the initial Vault series -the band's first ever full live performance released in entirety, though those were multitracked. whereas much of the DP onward is board tapes or advanced audio matrices, blending audience recordings with soundboards, etc which Im sure you know-) but you're absolutely right in that it's a shame they forwent the "Caveat Emptor" disclaimer with this one. I'm still satisfied with the box but it's not their best release in that regard, but again not as much mixing as that was likely all that was available from the source material used (still, even that's odd).
Heraly
This might be the best sounding Grateful Dead release I have on vinyl. So, the vocals on side C aren't a big deal at all. I have pretty much everything released.
Whiteflame
Side D is fine - side C starts out fine, then the vocals almost disappear for the rest of the side. The instruments are beautifully recorded, so it's baffling how the vocals were so poorly recorded on side C - the rest of the albums sound great to my ears. Had I known about the issue with side C before purchase, I still would have bought this release - there's plenty of great music here. (and nicely recorded).
FireWater
Sound is wonderful! Very happy. If you've listened to enough live shows you expect there to be inconsistencies in the mix. But this always sounds good, rich and present even if vocals are sometimes buried. Complaints here seem to be from peeps who never heard a boot.
Fenius
Pretty sure the no vocals thing is a technical issue during the recording. Has nothing to do with mastering or pressing. Other than that, the quality is very good! I just got done listening to it.
Zainn
not true at all.. I've heard vocals buried.. I'm sorry but it's simple... there are essentially no vocals for 4 songs.
Gaeuney
Yes vocals on C and D are very quiet. This is because of the original tapes. But I love this release. Vocals on the other five LPs are very good. The music sounds fantastic. Mastering of the instruments is really great! And what I really love on this release is the special atmosphere. It's not one of there "perfect" shows. This is "A special one". And I really like it. Takes you back on a trip to 1974 with amazing music.
Modigas
OH NO just got this in the mail. Paid a PRETTY PENNY and am afraid to listen :(( Someone should reimburse us or at least send a replacement show? Geezzzzz. Sadness.
Vut
You're afraid to listen to something you bought? Then don't open it, and sell it. And maybe move on to a different band?
Hulbine
is it me or is rhino trash? see more complaints about them than any other company... big bummer because they've got the rights to so many great bands... was looking into buying this. sadly I'll avoid.
Nikobar
I haven't heard many trashing on Rhino at all, other than some Black Sabbath fans. Some of their pressings sound absolutely amazing.
Malalrajas
Side C and part of Side D have barely audible vocals. Appears to be this way from the source. A bit surprised this got a formal release if so.
Akir
Vocals are horrible ... review on Amazon states "between the mix, the setlist, the energy of the show, the GREAT vocals" ... I've been tearing my stereo apart thinking there must be something wrong with it ... disappointing if this was the best show of the lot to put on vinyl ... sorry to hear that others have the same issue ... but happy to determine that this issue is with the album and not with my stereo. Peace!
Akinozuru
Haha absolutely. Vocals no voclas you got Jerry's lead going over these sections anyway. Who wouldn't prefer that
Fesho
Caveat Emptor - it's not that - they have said that with lots of their live recordings, including all of the Dick's Picks. We've come to expect high quality recordings with the occasional glitches that are part of any live show. These are no "glitches" ... this was a show that should have stayed in the vault. I'm disappointed in Grateful Dead Productions for releasing this album, and I've been buying GD music since 1972. I've never felt this way in the past. If this were a cassette tape like those I traded for years, I'd get rid of it.
Umsida
CAVEAT EMPTOR man. These are historical documents, not "KISS Alive!".
Androwyn
Almost seems like it was a SBD problem. I listened to a different source on Archive and it had the same issue. Bizarre really.
White_Nigga
Anyone give this a spin yet? The vocals on side C were so low they were nearly inaudible. Anyone else have this issue?
Viashal
Aside from side C this release sounds fantastic. Blown away by the Peggy O, sound is spectacular and may be the best I've heard.
Yggfyn
Yes, I've come to terms with the fact nothing was done to 'fix' the tapes. However, it was never clearly stated 4 songs have inaudible vocals. Other than those specific songs, the rest of the set sounds great and is overall a great show.
Xirmiu
Haven't heard it yet, but GD productions clearly states the old tapes are what they are. You can't re-add vocals. You could pick a different concert to press, but obviously, they felt this one was worth the release overall. Given deadheads common obsession with entire shows, they decided this one was worth it.
นℕĨĈტℝ₦
It's kind of hard to believe this is the way they intended it to be. Like perviously mentioned, the vocals are barely audible. Certainly doesn't sound good or anything I'd choose to listen to multiple times.
JoJosho
Yes, and the vocals half way through Sugaree and the rest of side C are very faint... it's bad.
Zovaithug
That is terrible if true for the price of this set man.
