The Man Who Sold the World is the third studio album by English rock singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was originally released by Mercury Records in the United States in November 1970, and in April 1971, with different artwork, in the United Kingdom. The album was reissued by RCA Records in 1972 used a black-and-white picture of Ziggy Stardust as the artwork, but subsequent reissues since 1990 have used the original UK cover as the official artwork. Due to the success of albums like The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars and Aladdin Sane, David Bowie began re-releasing some music made from 1971 and earlier. This included albums and singles, like Space Oddity, The Laughing Gnome , and of course, Life on Mars. This single also included another Bowie hit, The Man Who Sold the World , from the album of the same name. Similarly to Life on Mars , this song wasnt released as a single prior to the release of its album, however, was included as a B-side for the 1973 re-release of the single, Space Oddity. Working with guitarist Mick Ronson and producer Tony Visconti for the second time Bowie developed a tight, twisted heavy guitar rock that appears simple on the surface but sounds more gnarled upon each listen. The mix is off-center, with the fuzz-bass dominating the compressed, razor-thin guitars and Bowie's strangled, affected voice. On the album cover, Bowie is wearing a dress. Some of the lyrics are based on a poem by Hugh Mearns called The Psychoed: As I was going up the stair I met a man who was not there He wasn't there again today I wish that man would go away. I said, 'Well, this is David Bowie. This is The Man Who Sold the World record. He's like, 'Yeah, this is really cool. I said, 'You should check out Hunky Dory and stuff. They speak briefly about the person's past life. The person calls him his friend fan, he tells him that he thought he was not around anymore, but he tells him, that he still is and all this was the plan. In April 1971, it was released in the UK on the Mercury label with a striking photography by Keef Keith MacMillan of David wearing a dress. Mercury released The Man Who Sold the World with yet another cover in Germany. Commonly known as the round cover, this version is the rarest of the three Mercury releases. RCA reissued the album worldwide along with Space Oddity in1972 with a black and white Ziggy-era cover shot taken by Brian Ward. Scroll the images to view all four version of the album
