The second of two Darrow Fletcher compilations released by Ace, 2013's The Pain Gets a Little Deeper covers the earliest recordings from the beloved Chicago cult soul singer, rounding up the sides he recorded for local indie Windy City imprints Groovy, Jacklyn, Congress, Uni, Revue, and Genna between 1965 and 1971. A Chicago child prodigy who showed emotional maturity and vocal excellence from his first hit, made in 1965. The Cats - One Way Wind 1971-Top Sound. MP4. The Pain Gets A Little Deeper was the soul equivalent of Frankie Lymons Why Do Fools Fall In Love young, vulnerable, heart-felt vocals that belied the singers years. It entered the charts in January 1966 and catapulted the 14 year-old Darrow Fletcher to fame in the R&B world, particularly in his home city of Chicago. Elton John has cited the recording as one of the best soul records he has ever heard. The CD comprises Darrows complete releases up to 1971. Our earlier release Cross Over Soul CDKEND 382 features all his recordings from the recommencement of his studio career in 1975. By Ady Croasdell. Darrow's other 1971 single: Darrow Fletcher - Now Is The Time For Love, has more of a smooth Marvin Gaye thing going on and is almost as good as Dolly Baby. Weirdly, Now Is The Time For Love was compiled on a female soul compilation: Various - Sisters Sanctified Volume 1. It's a bootleg, and obviously the compilers either didn't know what they were doing or didn't care. Later on in the '70s Darrow cut more singles but never had notable success. He never even made an album well, he made one but it was never issued. However - he was received as a hero by the Northern. Love this track. The Pain Gets a Little Deeper. Kent have already issued a CD of his Crossover label recordings from the mid to late 70s including several unissued masters CDKEND 382. Darrow Fletcher is a tremendous talent whose early work finally gets its full due with this sterling CD researched and compiled to a tee by Ady Croasdell with a stunning 20-page booklet that contains superbly written, ultra-informative and comprehensive liner notes by both Robert Pruter author of the book Chicago Soul and Croasdell. It's photo-filled, showing Fletcher from 1965 to 2012 as well as color repros of all of the discs' labels both sides

Really excellent compilation which contains all Darrow Fletcher's early 45s which go for mega buckeroos on the Northern scene, most were made when he was still a teenager. Comes with a superb booklet with his story and some great photos.

All the early singles are good, but for me his best record is the super funky Darrow Fletcher - What Is This / Dolly Baby single from 1971. Both sides sounding like a really fly Michael Jackson. I love this 7" and have several copies (in case I lose one). Its not rare as such... but it's well worth getting if you see it. It's got a kind of timeless vibe about it.

Darrow's other 1971 single: Darrow Fletcher - Now Is The Time For Love, has more of a smooth Marvin Gaye thing going on and is almost as good as Dolly Baby. (Weirdly, Now Is The Time For Love was compiled on a female soul compilation: Various - Sisters Sanctified Volume 1. It's a bootleg, and obviously the compilers either didn't know what they were doing or didn't care).

Later on in the '70s Darrow cut more singles but never had notable success. He never even made an album (well, he made one but it was never issued). However - he was received as a hero by the Northern crowd when he visited the UK about 10 years ago.

The companion cd Darrow Fletcher - Crossover Records 1975-79 Soul Sessions collects his mid /late '70s stuff, and is also on Kent.
